Undo a Deleted Import: Recently Removed Imports

You uploaded three statements, tidied everything up, and then you clicked the trash icon on the wrong one. For a second your stomach drops. That was a month of transactions, all of them categorized by hand, and now the dashboard total looks wrong. Anyone who has managed their own data knows that exact feeling. A delete you cannot take back is one of the quietest ways an app can lose your trust. In a lot of tools, removing an imported batch is final, and worse, it can hide behind you: the file you deleted often will not import cleanly a second time, because the app still remembers those rows and skips them as duplicates. So you delete, you re-upload, and nothing comes back. That is the trap WIMM was rebuilt to close.

The fix is simple to describe. When you remove an import, WIMM does not destroy it. The transactions are set aside, the import record is kept, and the link between them stays intact. That preserved link is the whole point. It is what lets a restore put every row back exactly where it was, and it is what stops a re-upload from silently swallowing your data.

Removing an import, and the Undo that follows

Removing an import still works the way you would expect. On the /import page, open the account, find the file in your history, and click the trash icon. WIMM confirms how many transactions the import brought in, so you know the size of what you are about to remove, then it clears those transactions out of your dashboard, budgets, and reports.

The difference shows up the instant it is done. A toast appears at the corner of the screen with an Undo button. Click it and the whole import snaps back, transactions and all, no navigation required. This is the catch for the most common mistake, the one where you delete and immediately realize it was the wrong file. One click and the last few seconds never happened.

The Undo toast is the fastest path back, but it is not your only chance. Even after the toast fades, the import is still recoverable from the Recently removed imports list below. You are not racing a timer.

Recently removed imports: your thirty-day safety net

Below your import history sits a section called Recently removed imports. Every import you delete lands there, with the file name, the date it was removed, and a countdown showing how many days remain before it is cleared for good. Each row has a Restore button. Click it and the import comes back into your history, its transactions live again on every screen.

That section is deliberately easy to reach. It shows up even when you have no active imports left for an account, so a person who deleted everything and then panicked still has a visible way back. You never have to remember a hidden menu or contact support. The recovery path is right there on the same page you deleted from.

The window is thirty days. That is long enough to notice a mistake, come back from a trip, or realize a month later that you actually needed those numbers, without leaving deleted data sitting around forever.

Restore can never create a duplicate

Here is the part that makes Restore safe to use without thinking twice. When you bring an import back, WIMM does not blindly re-add every row. It checks each removed transaction against the ones currently live in that same account. If a row already has a match, meaning you re-imported that statement in the meantime, WIMM leaves that copy in the trash instead of adding a second one. Only the transactions that are genuinely missing come back.

The result is that restoring is always additive and always correct. You cannot end up with the same charge listed twice, and you cannot end up with a doubled account balance. Restore returns your data to a true state, not a messier one. And because the rows are revived in place rather than re-created, every category, note, and tag you had assigned comes back with them. You do not redo the work you already did.

What happens after thirty days

Removed imports do not linger forever. Once a day, WIMM clears out anything in the trash that has been there longer than thirty days, and at that point the deletion becomes permanent. This keeps your account clean and keeps genuinely unwanted data from piling up.

There is one reassuring detail in how this works. The moment you restore an import, it is no longer marked as removed, so the cleanup never touches it. A restored import is structurally impossible to purge. In plain terms: if you got it back, it is safe. The countdown only ever applies to things still sitting in the trash.
