Logging Debt Payments in WIMM (No Bank Link Required)

Debt payoff

Manual-first debt tracking: log a payment in seconds, watch the balance drop, see the principal and interest split, and keep your payoff current even for the accounts no bank link can reach.

There is a quiet assumption baked into most money apps: that every account you have will link cleanly to a bank feed. Real life is messier. The credit union that holds your car loan, the private student loan, the family member you are slowly paying back, plenty of debts live just outside what an automated feed can see. If your tool goes blank on those, your payoff plan goes blank too. WIMM is built the other way around. You do not need a linked bank to keep your debt payoff current. You log the payment, and everything updates.

Logging a payment takes about ten seconds

On any debt, click Log payment. A small form appears. You enter the amount (any number greater than zero) and the date. The date can be today or earlier, but not in the future, because you cannot have already made a payment that has not happened yet. There is an optional note field if you want to jot down "extra from side gig" or "double payment this month."

Submit it, and WIMM immediately lowers the balance. No waiting for a sync, no reconciliation step. The number on the card drops the moment you confirm.

That immediacy matters more than it sounds. The friction of "I'll update it later" is what kills most tracking habits. When logging a payment is a ten second task that gives instant feedback, you actually keep doing it.

Principal and interest, split automatically

A debt payment is never all progress. Part of it pays down what you owe (principal), and part of it pays the lender for the privilege of owing it (interest). Most people never see that split on a manual payment, which makes it hard to feel how much real ground each payment gains.

WIMM estimates the split for you on every payment. The interest portion is roughly the current balance times the monthly rate, and the rest is principal. So a $300 payment on a high-rate card might show as $250 of principal and $50 of interest, and you can see, payment by payment, how much of your money is actually shrinking the debt versus feeding the lender. As the balance falls, the interest slice shrinks and more of each payment becomes principal. Watching that shift is quietly motivating.

The smart "also mark the bill paid" checkbox

Many debts in WIMM are linked to a bill, because for a lot of people the monthly card or loan payment is also a recurring bill they track. When you log a payment on a linked debt, a checkbox appears: "also mark this bill paid for the cycle."

It is checked by default when that bill's cycle is not already marked paid, because the most common case is simple: you made the monthly payment, so the bill for this cycle is done. But if the bill is already paid for this cycle, the checkbox steps aside, and WIMM records your payment as extra principal instead. That way a second payment in the same month adds to your payoff progress without falsely double-marking a bill that was already satisfied.

Note

The "also mark the bill paid" default is doing something thoughtful, not random. Checked means "this was the regular payment, close out the bill cycle." When it is already paid, the box steps back and your payment lands as extra principal. So a routine monthly payment closes the bill, and a bonus payment on top quietly accelerates the payoff. You can always override the checkbox; WIMM just sets a sensible default for the common case.

The mirroring runs both ways

This connection is not one-directional. The mirroring between a debt and its linked bill runs both ways. Logging a debt payment can mark the linked bill paid for the cycle. And going the other direction, marking the bill paid can record the matching debt payment. You are free to work from whichever side of WIMM you happen to be in, the Debt page or the Bills page, and the other side keeps up. You never have to enter the same payment twice.

A payment history you can actually read

Every debt has a payment history sheet, and it is built to be read, not just stored. Each row lists the date, the amount, and the principal and interest split for that payment. Each one also carries a source badge so you know where it came from:

  • Manual, the payments you logged by hand.
  • From bill, mirrored over when you marked the linked bill paid.
  • From transaction, matched to something in your transaction list.
  • From sync, brought in by an automated bank feed.

When a payment matches a real transaction, the row links straight to it, so you can jump from "I logged $300" to the actual line that cleared your account. Above the list sits a small stats strip: total paid, the amount paid in the last 30 days, and the running principal versus interest totals. It is the whole story of one debt, on one screen.

How this compares to other tools

Tools that depend entirely on bank linking have a blind spot exactly where many people carry their hardest debt. The credit union loan or the private financing that the feed cannot reach simply does not show up, or shows up frozen and stale. The payoff plan built on top of it is then quietly wrong.

WIMM is manual-first. Linking is welcome when it works, but it is never the price of admission. Every payment counts, whether a feed found it or you typed it in, which means your payoff picture stays complete instead of complete-minus-the-account-you-most-wanted-to-track.
