The whole point of a finance app is that your transactions show up without you typing them. When you connect a bank to WIMM, that is exactly what happens. New purchases, deposits, and balances flow in on their own, and your dashboard, budgets, and bills stay current while you do nothing. The connection runs through Plaid, the same secure pipe thousands of finance apps use, and setting it up takes about a minute.

How the connection works
You start by adding an account, then choosing your bank from the list. WIMM hands you off to Plaid's secure Link screen, where you log in with your normal online banking credentials. Once Plaid confirms the login, the account connects and lands back in WIMM, ready to use.
The handoff matters more than it looks. WIMM never sees or stores your bank password. The login happens entirely inside Plaid's screen, and what comes back to WIMM is a token that lets it read your transactions, never your credentials. Plaid covers 12,000 plus banks, so most people find theirs in the list straight away.
The first sync pulls about two years of history

As soon as the account connects, WIMM does a first pull of roughly two years of transaction history. You are not starting from an empty page. The moment setup finishes, you have real spending to categorize, real bills to spot, and enough history for budgets and trends to mean something.
After that first load, you do not have to think about syncing again. Your bank notifies WIMM through a webhook whenever something new posts, so fresh transactions and updated balances arrive on their own. Incremental syncs are cursor-based and pull in batches, which keeps them quick, and balances refresh on every sync.
Note
If you want to pull immediately rather than wait for the bank to push, there is a Sync now button. It has a short cooldown of about two minutes, so it stays available for the moments you actually need it without hammering the bank.
Your data, kept private and encrypted

Bank data deserves real care, so here is the honest detail on how WIMM handles it.
Plaid access tokens are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM. Each encryption uses a fresh initialization vector, and the encryption key lives in a server environment variable, never written into the database in plaintext. Data moves over TLS in transit. WIMM does not sell your data, and your transactions are never used to train AI.
That last point is worth repeating, because it is easy to gloss over. Your spending stays yours. It powers your budgets and your categorization inside your own account, and it does not become training material for anyone's model.
When Plaid is not the right tool
No bank network reaches everything, and WIMM is honest about that. Some credit unions and smaller institutions are not in Plaid's coverage. For those, WIMM gives you first-class manual import. You can bring transactions in from a CSV, Excel, or OFX file and they sit right alongside your linked accounts, fully categorized and counted.
This pairing is deliberate. A linked account handles the banks Plaid reaches, and manual import handles the ones it does not, so nothing stays invisible.
How this compares to other tools
When Mint shut down, the thing people missed most was the auto-syncing dashboard that just kept itself current. WIMM brings that back through Plaid. The difference is in the gaps. Bank-only tools quietly ignore the credit union Plaid cannot reach, leaving part of your money off the screen. WIMM pairs Plaid with proper manual import, so the stubborn account is still tracked rather than forgotten.
Free and Premium
Connecting a bank through Plaid is a Premium feature, because the live sync and webhook handling run real ongoing infrastructure. If you are on the free tier, you are not locked out of tracking those accounts. Manual import of CSV, Excel, and OFX files is the free alternative, and it covers any bank you can export a statement from.
Try it on the demo
You can see how synced transactions look and feel before connecting anything of your own. The demo opens straight into the transactions view with sample data already loaded: app.wimm.money/demo?mode=transactions. When you are ready, sign in, add an account, and link the bank you use every day.
